Hi and welcome to a new episode of the Mom Bosses Abroad podcast.

I am Iva Perez and I am here today, as always, accompanied by my beautiful podcast co-host, Desiree Gonzalez.

And today we are unpacking the science behind this powerhouse water that you have probably have already heard about in previous episodes, this amazing Kangen water and why it's not just a trend but a necessity.

And today, our featured guest, the brilliant Carrie Merchant, is telling us all the things like, I mean, my nerdastic heart is bursting at the seams because she's really going to delve into the science of it all and how she integrates it seamlessly into her practice to elevate health on every level.

So, if you're curious about next level hydration and holistic business growth and making a line, sales feel easy and impactful.

I think this episode has a bit of everything and so we can't wait.

Welcome Carrie to our podcast.

Thank you so much.

Yeah, I want to really introduce Carrie a little bit more because you are just, it's just incredible all the things that you're doing.

So, Carrie is a naturopath and neuro-energetic kinesiologist with nine years of clinical experience.

She's got a health and science degree, two advanced diplomas and more than a few certificates.

Carrie is a self-confessed lifelong student and is dedicated over two decades to studying and learning all things natural health.

She has worked in a variety of clinical settings already, both in the medical and the integrative health space.

And she has a background and practitioner support for two of Australia's leading natural medicine companies.

And has most recently also held a training development and marketing role for a leading Australian kinesiology RTO.

So Carrie now runs her beautiful practice from home on the beautiful East Coast of Australia.

And I had the pleasure of actually seeing it just a few months ago.

She is passionate about addressing not only the physical imbalances that underlie the symptoms, but the emotional, the energetic and the spiritual imbalances that influence our health too.

So she integrates evidence-based natural medicine with both the wisdom of traditional therapies and the power of energy healing.

So Carrie was introduced to Kangen Water 18 months ago, and immediately recognized the potential, what this company, this business, what Enagic has a way to continue her purpose and passion work, free her from the burnout, and so allow her to work without the hustle and stress that a small business brings with it.

So since then, Carrie has been on a deep dive to research and fully understand all the products and is passionate about empowering others to do the same, which is why we are so grateful that you are now empowering us to learn more about why everyone needs to understand why we keep going on about this water.

Why is this water so, so, so important to what we're doing and and our mission right now?

So again, thank you for being here with us today.

So maybe let's start from the top.

What makes Kangen Water so different?

Like scientifically, well, how is it different from tap, bottled or even regular filtered water?

Because that's the first thing people say, oh, it's good, I'm fine.

I have, I drink good filtered water or I've got my bottled water.

No, I'm good, I'm good.

So what do you say to those people?

Well, I think really what it comes down to is understanding that Kangen Water is like an up level from regular water.

So filtering our water is so important.

We know this more so than ever, but it's just the first step.

And what people need to understand is that most of the water that they're drinking, even if it is clean or pure or filtered and that sort of thing, is often has been sitting stagnant for a long period of time, perhaps.

This could be like in tanks, it could be dams or reservoirs, or it could be in plastic bottles that are leaching microplastics and other toxins.

And then we've also got to understand that water runs through toxic pipes, it's treated with chemicals.

So it's really a case of understanding that water isn't always, it's not always just a case of drinking more water, it's drinking the right type of water.

And Kangen's really quite different because another thing about water is it can often be acidic, and it can also be at a cellular level like an oxidant.

And what's different about Kangen Water is it's been electrolyzed.

And so that process, it's actually its scientific term or its scientific name.

Kangen Water is a trademark name, but its scientific name is electrolyze-reduced water.

And another name is ionized or alkalized water.

You might hear that one as well, but its scientific name is this electrolyze-reduced water.

And what it means that it's undergone like an electrical charge or electrolysis.

And as a result of this, the water molecules are split and the water is separated into acidic and alkaline parts, essentially.

And a gas called molecular hydrogen is produced.

And so what we are essentially drinking is like an alkaline water with this gas in it.

And molecular hydrogen is a potent antioxidant.

And the strongest and the smallest antioxidant that exists.

And so what this means is that it acts as a reducing agent and donates electrons.

And then what that happens then is it neutralizes free radicals at a cellular level.

And it actually works right down to the level of the DNA and has the ability to even cross the blood-brain barrier because it's so tiny.

There's lots of study.

Yeah.

So there's lots of studies on molecular hydrogen showcasing this.

So interesting.

So because I think just going back a few explanations, what people really get hung up about as well is like, do we have ionized water or electrolyzed reduced water or alkalized water?

You know, people already get confused like what is it?

Are they different or is it the same?

Essentially, it's the same.

It's the same.

We're drinking water that's been electrolyzed and reduced.

Reducing means it has an antioxidant potential.

But in the process of that, it becomes alkalized.

And we do this through what's called an ionizer, and it's the process of ionization.

Right, right.

Okay.

Because then we know a little bit like what terms to use, and that it's okay, and that it explains it as a whole.

And that's also interesting because a lot of people then ask, you know, it's like we try to explain, obviously, these terms of like, you know, like the molecules get split apart, you know, I love to make little drawings as well, what happens.

And then that means the molecules actually become so small that they are actually able to penetrate our cells, be able to hydrate us from a cellular level, and then also like cross that blood-brain barrier, right?

Like that is sort of the reason why that happens.

Well, I mean, the water molecules don't become smaller.

What happens is some of the water molecules separate and are split, and that causes a change in pH.

So what happens is that change in pH can make it easier at a cellular level for the water to hydrate and get into the cell.

There's a really, really quite complex biochemistry that happens there.

Like I couldn't even really begin to describe it.

And I think a lot of studies haven't probably even been done on it, but water molecules pass through the cell membrane like a million per second.

And so it's, and they travel one by one through the membrane.

So what's really important to understand is that that alkalized ionized water or electrolyzed juice water does hydrate more rapidly at a cellular level because it eats more bioavailable.

And it does, it creates like favorable conditions at like that cellular level.

But as for exactly how that happens, it's not so simple as the water molecules being smaller, say.

But the molecular hydrogen is, the molecular hydrogen is the smallest molecule that exists.

So that gas is in the water and that molecular hydrogen just permeates everything without even trying because it's so small.

Okay.

All right.

Now that definitely gives a better picture of how to explain that process for sure.

And this is what allows the water to really feel like it's not only hydrating, but it's also giving you like that boost, right?

It's also making you feel like more energy and that you feel more revitalized after drinking it.

It's because of what it's doing biologically to all your systems, all your organs.

That's exactly right.

And the molecular hydrogen, like we know that electrolyzed juice water contains molecular hydrogen, it's because it has what's called a negative ORP.

And this ORP is called the oxidation reduction potential.

And so we can actually measure this and we can see that Kangen Water or electrolyzed juice water has a negative ORP, which is the water's potential to donate electrons or reduce, which is another way of saying it's an antioxidant.

And an antioxidant will reduce free radicals and oxidative stress.

So that negative charge is one of the reasons why that water is so bioavailable to ourselves.

Right.

And with regular water, it doesn't matter how much we filter it.

If we were to measure the ORP, it would be positive.

Yeah.

I do that.

I love to do that out with friends or something, you know, and I have like a little reader, just like it's like a fun thing to bring along anyways.

A party drink.

Yeah, this is a party drink.

Exactly.

This is the water we get like served in a restaurant or something, if we're sitting somewhere.

And I always have a water bottle with me, obviously.

And then I pour some of that in.

They're like, wow, that's incredible.

I was like, yeah.

But you also can't bottle that.

Like they did something super sneaky here in a supermarket in Tokyo, where I saw something, they're like, oh, we have 9.5 pH water, that's an antioxidant with a negative ORP.

And I was like, wait a second, you can't shelf that.

That is, that's, I learned that that's not possible.

So what did Des do?

I bought it.

I bought it and we tested it at home.

And I was like, yes, let's give them that.

It was a 9.8 pH, it said on the bottle.

And it was true, I tested it out, it was accurate.

But no way, it was a positive.

It was a part of positive ORP because obviously that charge cannot stay.

And so I was like, wow, that is extremely false marketing.

Yeah, exactly.

And that's the thing, when there's a positive ORP, it means that that liquid has the potential to oxidize.

And that oxidation is like what happens when we see an apple turning brown.

It's like that degradation.

It's like rusting.

And it basically was what causes oxidative stress and free radicals.

So it's not saying that regular water is going to do that to you, but it has that potential too.

And so it's just really being able to see clearly between the two that when we have electrolytes which is water, we're actually creating something quite unique.

And there's, you know, Kangen in Japanese, I believe, is returned to origin.

So it's really bringing back to water, back to how it's meant to be.

You know, before it was sitting around and sitting there and sitting there and sitting there, like, I have rainwater here and it's, you know, our...

We've had issues with the tanks and the pumps and we haven't had running water and I've had to kind of get the water out of the tank from the hose and it hasn't been filtered and it's disgusting, you know?

But when I put it through my filters and my Kangen ionizer, it comes out really charged up and clean and just feels so good to drink.

So, you know, in the perfect world, I wouldn't have to do that.

I wouldn't have to need a Kangen machine.

I just live on a, you know, I live near a bubbling spring and I drink from the earth, you know?

But those days are over.

You know, you can do that.

Hey, Mama, if you've been looking for a way to make an impact in health, create long-term wealth for your family and design a freedom lifestyle, all while being part of an amazing supportive community, then listen up.

We found a business model that's not just about making money, but about doing soulful work that's truly aligned with who you are.

No more burnout, no more trading time for money, just a powerful proven way to create real change for yourself and others.

If this speaks to you, head over to mombossesabroad.com and watch a quick 30-minute video that could completely shift your perspective on what's possible for your future.

Because, mama, you deserve freedom, abundance and purpose.

Let's create it together.

For me, what's incredible is this, like I would have never made that link before between drinking water.

It's always about drinking water to stay hydrated, but not drinking water to really offset oxidative stress or that possibility within us.

And I also heard from someone, she's a big personality, and she also talks about, and probably I'm saying the word wrong, but she said that we are internally cooking, and when we are done cooking, that's when we are done living, because it's like we turn brown on the inside.

And that process is called glycolation, I think.

And so the more foods that go into that acidic sphere, the more sugar, all of that contributes to that process to become faster, to speed up.

And so it's incredible to see how Kangen Water is actually one other way besides what we eat and other health practices, but also how it keeps that oxidative process that naturally is going to happen to all of us going much more slower.

And so it's incredible to make that link knowing about all of this in going into the science with you, Carrie.

Yeah, for sure.

I think some of the biggest changes I've felt since I've started drinking Kangen Water is that definitely like Iva mentioned as well for me, was the energy that I felt so much more energetic.

I mean, I have two little kids.

We have two little kids and you don't sleep.

As a mom, I have, I didn't think I've slept a full night through in years, and I'm usually very tired.

I'm also a night owl, so I go to bed too late anyways.

And I've always had to come at that with lots of matcha, coffee, anything that keeps me awake.

But I felt now, I feel like I have this new battery inside of me.

I just keep going and going.

And it's only recently that I actually thought, wow, I actually do feel different.

I do have a lot more energy.

So that's interesting.

And another thing that then my husband mentioned is that, and just like we haven't been sick.

Like I've been sick, but also like different reasons.

Of course, your kid's like snotting in your face all day.

That's a different story.

However, like for him, especially, like he doesn't like, or even if we do, we bounce back so quickly.

So I think it's really, really impacted just the immunity levels.

Yeah.

Right.

Definitely.

Yeah.

Yeah.

I mean, water, water is, we're 70% water and like hydration is a huge piece of the puzzle.

So it's going to have a full on effect on every single aspect of your health, really.

Most specially in the society that we live on, which is we all have our caffeine fix and caffeine dehydrates a lot.

So if you're going to be taking caffeine, whether it's through coffee or matcha, which is my preference, you still have to make sure that you are intentional about hydrating because it really dehydrates.

Definitely.

Definitely.

As you can see that.

One of the best things you can do is have a big glass of Kangen Water in mid-afternoon.

You know, when you've got that, some people get that slump, low blood sugar.

Yeah.

They go for that second or third coffee, which is the worst time to have coffee.

And having a big glass of Kangen Water is a really, really great alternative to energizing you through the afternoon because a lot of the times, hunger is dehydration, just speaking differently.

And then also, molecular hydrogen and caffeine do actually have similar kind of effects on the brain and helping the brain wake up.

They just work on different parts of the brain in different ways.

But, yeah.

That is so interesting.

That is true.

It's such a good point.

Because it's our everyday normal, we don't really think about it.

True.

What do I do when I hit that slump?

Make myself a cup of coffee.

Because I also love coffee.

I really do.

It's just like when I was pregnant, people were like, just drink decaf.

I was like, but that's also not the point.

Or actually the other way around.

I love just that tradition, that ritual of making a coffee, having a coffee and having something to drink, which is really nice.

So it's often that.

Nothing wrong with that.

Nothing wrong with that at all.

I guess it's really like when we're using as a crutch.

Yeah, but I could really just drink a load of water and it'll have even a more powerful effect to the energy level.

So getting out of, wow, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Yeah, because the brain's one of the first places that you feel the impact when you drink Kangen Water or a lot of water because the brain is 80% water.

And having a hydrated brain is so important to how we feel, how we think, our cognition, our memory, our emotional regulation.

Oh my God, yeah.

It's how you rewire as well, a new neural pathway.

Through my practice with clients in hypnotherapy, I always tell them, you have to drink water because you need electricity to create those new neural pathways.

So it's like it comes down to the best conduit of electricity is water.

And so water also fulfills that.

I love that, Iva.

I love that.

How they make that connection.

That's fantastic, incredible.

And also I think what Carrie also said was on point.

As mothers, since we don't sleep through the night, it's been years as well, same here, this.

The more tired you are, the more hungry you get because you need to stay awake somehow.

You need to have that sugar to be pumping somehow.

So you end up saying, why am I putting on weight?

Or why all of a sudden my diet is going haywire?

But it's mostly because we're so tired that we are looking for food as a way to just sustain that energy level.

So this is another great way to, if weight management is something that you are really, really, you want to maintain or is one of your goals, this is one way to do it is to be drinking lots of Kangen water.

Absolutely.

And it's water that's actually hydrating.

It's water that's going to get into yourselves rapidly and it's going to support the application as well.

And yeah, that's huge.

And drinking, I'm a big fan of drinking Kangen water and big goes.

I'm not a sipper when it comes to my Kangen.

I've got a glass of it sitting here, which is annoying me because I don't normally sip on the stuff.

I normally just chuck it down, straight in, straight down the hat.

You get the most impact from it.

So tell us a bit more about that.

That's true.

You did teach it in the course.

I remember I made note of it because now I do that too.

In the morning, I usually have my water, so now I drink it in one go, then fill myself another one that maybe I'll sip.

But the first one is always just straight out.

I always think of you.

See, I think of you every morning, Carrie.

But tell us, why is that better to drink it in a big amount rather than sipping it?

Well, concentration and dose, essentially.

And also it's a gas.

Gas, what does a gas do?

It floats away quite quickly.

And so we want to get it into the body before it starts floating away.

Molecular hydrogen is like the factory manager.

It comes in, gets everything into order, tells everyone what they're doing right or wrong, organizes it all and then leaves.

And leaves the factory working better.

It doesn't really stick around.

I love that analogy.

Yeah, it's so good.

Yeah, and so when we're drinking it all the time, day in, day out, we're drinking low amounts essentially when we're drinking it through electrolytes reduced water.

It's not massively high doses, but that's okay.

We're drinking it regularly, consistently, day in, day out.

And then it has that ongoing kind of accumulative effect.

That's why tapped, I always say tapped, tapped from your machine fresh is always better as well.

You can't have it just sitting.

It's so funny when my seven-year-old comes home from school, sometimes I get like, Luca, Luca, you didn't finish your water bottle, just finish it.

I was like, oh, my dad's old now, can I have a fresh water?

And I was like, well, that's a smart, good boy.

He'll even ask me when he's at a play date, and he's like, the mom will offer him, it's like, oh, do you want to drink some water?

And he's like, oh, do you also have Kangen water?

And the moms are like, what water?

And then they look at me and I'm like, thanks, Luka.

Thanks for the set up, you know?

Because it's five in the conversation, I was like, good boy, I haven't trained him.

But it's fun, it's really great how the kids are ready at this young age, they pick up on that, and the family always asks for fresh water.

Right.

It's interesting, and now there's, I can actually explain to him why that is also better.

Yeah, and you've also got the pH as well.

And so, you know, the whole sort of, you know, like the pH of the high pH of Kangen Water is from the electrolysis.

It's not from anything added in.

There's nothing's been added to the water.

So it's really like, you know, the longer the water sits there and isn't being drunk, and the elements are less effective, it's going to be.

So we want to have it fresh if we can, or if we do put it in a water bottle, put it in a really airtight one, like a stainless steel water bottle with a really good lid, and don't keep opening it through the day, you know?

Like every time you open the bottle, you're going to lose a bit more hydrogen.

So it's really good just to, I actually drink it first thing in the morning, and I normally have three times a day where I just drink a lot of water and then kind of leave it at that, but I work from home, so I don't have to really travel around.

If I did, I'd put it in a water bottle for sure.

So I love how it's not only how much quantity to drink, but it's the right water, and it's also how you drink it, which also makes an impact on this water.

Yeah, and you won't get so bloated on this water, Rita, because it's got a high pH, it's quite alkaline, it does stimulate the stomach to empty the water quite quickly as well, so most of the time you'll feel it go through quite quickly, you won't be feeling that heavy feeling where they're all just sitting there.

Acidic water can, you know, water that's more acidic takes longer to absorb into the cells and all of it, so it's one of the reasons why we, the pH is part of the reason why we feel so hydrated on it.

Ah, that's interesting.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

On that, I had someone actually say, oh, but it's not so good to drink this type of water regularly all the time because you don't want to change your body needs.

Your stomach does need to assert an acidity to break down the food.

So it's actually not that good because it'll change the environment and that's not healthy.

Like, what would be a good comeback for that one?

Well, that's a really, well, it's a huge miss when it's a big misunderstanding about Kangen Water and it's understandable that people get confused with it because I think for a long time, not even Kangen Water made it so good.

They electrolyze reduced water has been around for decades, decades, decades since the early last century.

But Kangen Water, they didn't really discover until probably, I think it was, I think it might have been the early 2000s that molecular hydrogen was the key kind of hero in the water.

And prior to that, they thought it was the pH that was creating the therapeutic or the benefits, say.

But the truth of the matter is scientifically is that, is that even though the pH is very high, it has a very weak alkalinity.

So, it means that it doesn't really neutralize acids very well.

So, that's actually really good news for our stomach acid, because Kangen Water won't really touch the sides.

For a start, I never recommend anyone drink water with their food, because any water is going to dilute stomach acid, any water.

The second thing is, is that we don't walk around with stomach acid just sitting there.

It gets triggered when we start eating.

So, aside from the fact that the pH of Kangen Water isn't going to affect stomach acid, we wouldn't really be wanting to drink at either side of food anyway, because digestion is best to have our food without too many liquids anyway.

That makes sense.

I see, I see.

So, when would be the best time to then drink the water?

More like how long should we drink before?

You need to drink before eating on an empty stomach.

That's why I really like the idea of drinking water.

I personally like drinking water just a few times a day, and just having a good amount of it, and having it in between meals, because it's like you can just feel it going into you.

And then when it's time to have a meal, for a start, your appetite's going to be more regulated because you're hydrated.

And the second thing is that you're not having to drink with your food because you're thirsty.

You might want to have a cup of tea or something after you've eaten, that's fine.

Like maybe wait half an hour or something, but you know, you don't want to be having drinks when you're supposed to be digesting.

Wow, my kids will love this news, because I'm always on the case like, drink your water, finish your water, drink your water while they're like eating, right?

Yeah, I know, yeah.

They're actually intuitively already doing it, right?

Yeah, they're so much more advanced than me on this topic, seriously.

And in terms of the body being acidic and alkaline, that's quite a complicated topic because the thing is, the body's got very sophisticated internal homeostatic mechanisms that keep our pH perfect, to keep us alive.

So you can't really like, oh, it's a hard one to go into, but the whole alkalizing the body thing, I'm a bit wary of making statements like that.

For a start, Kangen is not strongly alkaline, so it's not going to really make a difference in that regard.

But when you're looking at the benefits of that pH at a cellular level, it's definitely helpful to the body.

And acidic is stressful, you know?

So we're removing stress, but it's not just about what the water does, it's also what the water doesn't and how it actually makes it easier at the cellular level for the body.

So it's easier on the body, I feel, Kangen Water.

In terms of acidic acidity, like there's so much that you can do to have, like it's not just the water we drink, it's being in nature, it's not having too much exposure to electromagnetic frequencies, it's reducing stress in our lives, it's getting enough sleep, eating good food, like there's so many things to take into regard in terms of us being in our optimal state.

Right.

Yeah.

We're holistic in that sense, right?

Absolutely.

I love that.

I love that.

And it's about, you know, so many people are really thinking about, oh, what can we add to our lifestyle in order to up level our health?

Which supplements shall we now swallow?

You know, what are all the food?

I mean, food, yes, it's fair enough, but people are only concentrating on the food.

Like all these mission is out there.

And like what type of food?

Yes, absolutely.

Super important.

But no one really talks about what water should we be drinking to support our complete health, like our complete body.

Which is crazy, isn't it?

Super crazy.

Because eventually that needs to come first.

Let's get the basics right.

Where it's 70% water, let's get the water, and then let's start talking about what else can be add.

Yeah, exactly.

And it comes down to those things like sleep, water, like having healthy relationships, like these fundamental things before we start getting into biohacking and all of the fancy stuff and our infrared this and whatever we're doing.

But what, you know, what are we drinking?

Are we sleeping?

You know, are we in a happy relationship or not?

You know, like, do we have enough money?

Are we in financial stress?

Like these are the things that make the difference.

The other stuff is just added on top.

And if those foundational things aren't right, it doesn't matter how much money we spend on holistic wellness practices.

It's not going to touch the sides.

It's just going to, we're just going to be treading water.

Okay.

Can we just say our minds are already blown by everything Carrie just shared about what's actually happening inside this water?

And we're only getting started.

There was too much goodness to squeeze into one episode, so we split it into two.

And in part two next week, we're going to dive even deeper into the science, the stories and why your cells, yes, your actual cells are going to thank you for drinking Kangen Water.

If you found value, inspiration, or enagic of wisdom in any part of our conversation, we would be so grateful if you could take a moment to show your support.
