Juggling Act | The Advantage of Being Multi-Passionate

Iva 1:13
Today I am here with my beautiful co-host, Desiree Gonzales. Hi Des and welcome.
Desiree 1:20
Hello Iva.
Iva 1:22
And today we're diving into the exciting and dynamic world of being a multi passionate entrepreneur. So a little bit of you know, what does it mean to pursue multiple passions in business? And what are the incredible benefits that come with it? You know, this is all what we want to explore today in this episode, so let's get started.
Desiree 1:48
Yes, I think it's such an interesting topic and a conversation. I think that's come up naturally amongst us, mompreneurs, because I think as an entrepreneur- or mompreneurs, as we call ourselves- it is almost in our nature to be multi passionate about things, isn't it? We see opportunities in more than one thing. And I think it's beautiful but it does come with cautions that we have to take.
Iva 2:25
Right, because as you use the word multi-passionate, it really embodies that spirit of someone or at least this is what I have found about myself because I do consider myself to be multi-passionate as well, is that you know, you are pursuing various interests and ventures simultaneously. And so there's juggling different pursuits, but it gives you such a wealth and breadth of experience that I think for me that is what's really alluring, intoxicating and activating. It really energizes me to feel that I can be playing in different arenas at the same time. Exactly.
Desiree 3:13
Exactly. I think okay, and here a disclaimer: by multi-passionate, we completely take off the motherhood side of course. We have so many passions when we are in motherhood and life and as a partner, but that aside, we're just talking about the business sense here. But when I went to explore to become an entrepreneur in the first place, I had this really big thing about but I don't want to just be defined by this one thing. I didn't want that. I felt like I was so much more than that. One thing I didn't want to be labeled or put into like a drawer, like we said, be put into this category. But I was very natural about being well, I'm interested in so many different things. Why do I have to choose one? People become quite scared to talk about anything as let's say you settled for something that you say maybe there's a skill or a hobby or something where they say ‘hey I see potential I can probably monetize this. Let me go into this online digital world’ or maybe you're a product-based business or something. And you go full on into this one thing, right? But then all of a sudden, you say Oh, I just found this and this is super interesting as well. Or I have been spending some time reading up on this in this in this. But people nowadays in our word of world of social media, where most of our marketing efforts go to or you know, wherever we talk about the thing that we do-whatever it may be- people all of a sudden become almost scared to talk about it. They become so afraid to mention any other thing than what they're promoting actively as an entrepreneur. And I often think that it's not right because I think one of the definitions of being an entrepreneur is about seeing the different opportunities that are in front of you and not just circling in and to this one thing like you probably did for your nine-to-five job but that is what you came into work to do. That is what you're doing then you get out of work and then that's it. Right. Do you have more of a wider vision as an entrepreneur?
Iva 5:52
Well, yeah, and you know, I feel that as you say, a lot of what might be the conditioning behind this because for many entrepreneurs or aspiring entrepreneurs, yes, they're often told to focus on one thing, right or just keep it keep it narrowed down or niche yourself down or whatever that might look like. However, it also happens that we are holistic beings, we're not only about one thing, and so I feel that our zone of genius comes when we're able to realize and have this self-discovery that there's different things that activate me; there's different pursuits and there's different passions, but when they come together within me, this is what gives me this bigger sense of purpose. So, in this expansion, I think that it's not a hindrance, it's rather an advantage because it keeps you in the race for much longer. Because we all know that being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart and being an entrepreneur I mean, if you're going into entrepreneurship, just to make money, which I don't believe is the case of our listeners, right? Because we don't tick that way. It's not just for that one end result like yes, we want financial freedom for what it offers, but the soul seeks more, and not just okay, I need to go into this type of business because it's the one that's going to make me money the fastest. It really goes against the spirit of being multi-passionate because the passion comes from the heart. And it comes from a place of how can I make an impact and how can I help others along the way through the gifts and through the talents and the skills that I am willing to cultivate and focus on so the one thing or the one item focus, I feel, it tends to be very short-sighted or it tends to be like a different model of business altogether, which we're not here to embrace because we're not on that track. So it's great to make this distinction because this multiple passions are what I feel tend to happen is that they merged together into this into is who I am, and this is what I'm bringing to the table in so many different ways. In so many different facets. And I think that also counteracts any sense of shame, or as you say, any sense of, oh, I'm not being consistent in my messaging or people are gonna think that I'm not doing well here. So that's why I need to be doing this as well. Right? Like all these other stories that might come into play, when in reality is like no, I am doing this and I am doing this because they have a point of commonality and they blend so beautifully and in harmony. Remember that harmony is a key word for us that we have always talked about. Because harmony is in flow with what is and sometimes there are seasons in our lives where the way that we get to share, have impact, serve others is through this venture or through this platform. And we want to highlight it a little bit more, but it doesn't mean that you don't have other things running in the background at the same time.
Desiree 11:11
And I want to give a quick example of how I really defied the situation. So I came into the world of entrepreneurship from a corporate job and the hotel and one of the things and you know, opening up all of these hotels was really development of people and training. That was a huge thing. Then I found something that I was truly passionate about. And as you all know, I turned my passion into my business and I went into the world of network marketing, but very heavily focusing on first of all, helping people. I didn't go into it to make money at all in the first place but just really to help people but then also to put into bringing in my strengths of developing people or training education. So that became a very big part of then my personal brand. And I went into the world of digital courses because I felt that's where I could do it like within my community to teach about my network marketing business and the products that we have, but also then going a step further into teaching. So now all of a sudden, I already have two things, right? I have two aspects of my business, and that is totally fine and that develops into more and then all of a sudden you will find something else. I found something else that I am now complementing into it. And again, it's another product related for health and everything that I stand for. And I think it is it blends beautifully together because again, I'm going back to the core about I started this to help people, for me personally to help people on their health journey as a family, as a mom with young children. You know, what is the overall picture? I'm trying to paint and to help people on their way. So, at first, I was a little bit afraid, you know, to bring in too many elements because I'm like, ooh, am I diluting my message? But then I had a really interesting conversation with a friend of mine as well. And she's like, because we had to quantify something we did for like this one part, this one affiliate marketing part, right. And I was like, Yeah, but wait a second. I cannot quantify it just for that because I had these milestone celebrations for my other side of the business. But I felt so wrong to separate it because for me, it's real, and she's like you know what, but it is one because it is your brand it is your personal brand. And it was all the things you do are in your brand. So you shouldn't separate it either. And that's true. That made me feel a lot better about less like not saying less goal driven or numbers driven, but more like yes, what needles that I make move as my personal brand that has these beautiful multi-passionate elements inside of it.
Iva 14:22
Right. Yeah. And I love that you share this because it's so important to have this fully embedded. I feel like this internalized sense of, okay, I am the brand, like my energy is what it's all about, like what I bring to the table and again, it goes into this notion that we just don't bring one thing to the table. We just don't have like this one thing is like a beautiful blend or combination. And I know that you're very familiar with this term, because it's a Japanese term, Ikigai. Which is this reason for being a little bit like the rough translation. Your sense of purpose and any skills, the knowledge, the activities, you’re your individual profile, and it puts it within this, this scheme or this blend or this bucket, if you will, that encompasses what you love + what you're good at + what can you be paid for to do and what the world actually needs. And so, just from that concept alone, I think multi-passionate, is a big part of it because it brings in from different directions. And I play a little bit the devil's advocate, okay, let's say that we have fully embraced that hurdle or that mindset. The resistance of okay, I can only be one thing until I'm fully mastered this and then I can move on to the other one and just keep yourself on one track for the sake of what other people would say or because you're afraid that your message will be diluted or whatever. But let's say that you fully embrace the fact that yeah, okay, this is way up. And all the things and activities that I'm doing the ventures, the business ventures that I'm pursuing, they all add up in one way or another, you know, this our touch points where people can find me and interact with me and understand what I'm bringing to the table and if they resonate and we pursue the conversation and we take it to a different level. But one, I guess, of the things that people have, perhaps a little bit of resistance towards is how do you balance the multiple ventures right? It could be a little bit challenging, like how do you manage the time and the energy effectively? And so I wanted to ask you Des, like what have been your strategy so far into diving into multiple passions?
Desiree 17:14
That's a great question. And I think something that I've been, you know, on a discovery journey myself as well. And one thing, of course, is to you need to be very, very clear about what is your personal brand- like what is your personal message? And what is it that you what when people think about your name and your business, what do you want them to come up with in their mind, oh, Desiree does this; Iva does this, right. So I think from there already once you have created that foundation, and that is what your personal brand is about right? And then anything else you do under that will make perfect sense to them. They won't be surprised if all of a sudden you enter this other thing because it's all part of your personal brand to promote X, Y & Z. So for me as well, I work very hard on this foundation. over several years, I think and I'm still doing it to build up this brand to do my messaging. My posts, for example, they all don't all have a CTA. It's just I want people to get to know me as me and what I do and what I stand for. And then when I introduce like one part of my business, that makes perfect sense to them, because that's what she uses. That's her tool for what she's trying to convey to us. So, then when I introduced my second thing, which was the digital course, but the course was directly correlated to my network marketing business because I am now certifying people to become more in knowledge of what we're trying to do with the network marketing to use these products to actually become certified. And to explain that and get into that more. Okay, so that goes together. They're like, Oh, it complements So again, when I'm talking about one, I'm automatically talking about the other. Now, my challenge this year, I think, was to even introduce a new something. But again, I feel people it didn't really come as a surprise to people because one key thing is that it needs to blend together you can't then all of a sudden say okay, I'm promoting health and now I am selling bags.
Iva 19:56
Crypto cryptocurrency.
Desiree 20:00
Like yeah, oh, now I'm going into stocks. Like it just does not make sense, right? Like you could… you could totally do that. Maybe then you need to have two different messages, maybe different accounts. And I want to get into the accounts a little bit later but once it blends together, like I introduced something that I'm now affiliated with, which is another health product which I think is makes perfect sense into leading people to a healthier lifestyle to free their homes from chemicals and toxic overload. It makes sense. So it wasn't so difficult to include that in my messaging. And then to do it. Now going back, I'm digressing a little bit, but when it comes back to your question, how do I handle the many things I think that is fairly challenging to dedicate enough time to all three and this is always remind beautiful, passionate about automation comes into all of this right is that I need to have certain things set up so that while I'm concentrating about this new thing now that has come into my business, the other two that have been there longer are kind of running on their own. People know about my network marketing business. All my education is there. I have years and years worth of education and content in there that they can dive into my digital course is it's done. It's pre-recorded. People can take it at whatever time and now I actually have time to focus a little bit more on the new thing and to fully integrating it into my business. Do I feel I'm spreading my message a bit too far? No, because I it all blends together. Do I feel like I'm doing too many things? Yeah, sometimes. I honestly sometimes do because I'm like, Oh my God, I feel like I have more things to do. When I'm always complaining. I don't have time. Right.
Iva 22:12
Well it's also, I mean, if you if you go into the rabbit hole of Human Design, and we do have an episode on this - go and check it out. We'll put it in the show notes, but it's also a little bit part of your, your profile.
Desiree 22:27
I can't help it. I can't help it.
Iva 22:31
It's who you are. It is who you are.
Desiree 22:34
It's true. But yes, I have had conversations with people who are like, but you know, you already always say you don't have enough time. Shouldn't you go deeper into the two things you already have? Just go deeper into it. Do the marketing even better, more detailed and just repeat your messages again and again and again, and just not bring in yet another thing, but part of it is also because it's a personal brand, it's part of my lifestyle. Like you said, I love that you entered in the Human Design bit. That probably makes sense. I can't help myself. But the point is also it's my personal brand and I would have this thing in my life anyways, right? That product that I've introduced is part of my home. Anyways, that entrepreneur inside of me now thinks Ah Wait a second. There's also business opportunity there which I am going to bring up but I would be doing it anyways. That's the point.
Iva 23:45
I feel to complement what you what you're sharing is that it's less of an effort when it comes from a genuine authentic place. In terms of what is it that you're pursuing and it ties in again with that sense of purpose and that sense of what is it that I believe in? Because when we are having a conversation about being multi-passionate is: all this multi-passion in our lives today enhance us as the best version that we are? Or do they have a different motivation that doesn't fully align with that essence? And making an impact because we truly believe in the cause? Regardless of and I love that you are sharing this because I know what this is about. I know what your latest venture is all about. And what I have to say to that is this: if this is something that you would engage in, whether there's a business upside to it or not, because you are doing it because you fully believe it and you know that it's good and is part of who you are-your values and it's part of what you want to bring into your life to enhance it- then if it has a business, monetary, financial upside or whatever, that is just the icing on the cake. And I feel that people will naturally sense and feel that authentic vibe behind it rather than if it's calculated and with an agenda that is more like, Oh, I'm doing this because I have made the pros and the cons and then it's better than this other thing, but it doesn't light you up or it's not something that you're willing to integrate as part of your life. Look, my dad was a business consultant. And so he wasn't married to a brand and he wasn't married to a company. But he did get called in to work on projects for companies. And as such, I remember that one of the things that he would come home with was like, Okay, so now I'm working with so and so, so we're going to try their products. We're gonna see what this is about or we're going to you know, he went in from that consumer standpoint of what the service or this company was providing and I was like, Oh my God, but we're always like sort of changing here, but now that I see it from this angle where I am now, I can very much understand that the authenticity, the way that he would be able to better advice that he could better come in and help the company was by really embodying it to some extent. And that is where I feel that you are in right now with these ventures is that you are embodying them because you believe in them because even if there was nothing else to gain from them, what you're gaining from them personally so you want to share it and really tell other people about it. And so, it's that element of I believe in this so much- regardless of what is on the other side exactly. If you want to be multi-passionte you have to be real excited because there's no other way Like I was I was hearing from someone and I don't have the attribution of sorry, I don't have his name right now. But he was sharing that the highest frequency that we can emit as human beings, the highest frequency that we can emit and that other people can pick up on almost immediately, without putting their finger on it- but they just pick up on it- is the frequency of authenticity. And what authenticity really is at the end of the day is that you believe what you say and you say what you believe. That's it. You believe what you say, and you say what you believe. So the question is: can you be authentic by going into a business or having a business venture or a leg of your multiple businesses in something that you don't believing in or something that you don’t resonate with or that is not fulfilling you, is not enabling you or not making you passionate about it? Exactly.
Desiree 29:03
And I think there's so many people though that do exactly that. They go in it for the business ends into making money and I don't think there's anything wrong with it right. It's just a different way of doing it because they will do it differently and they find something else in there. They do the coaching on a different level right and then regardless of let's say what the product is, but then what also because I guess again, in my personality, my Human Design is I like to help people, I like to do all that and then sometimes though, you get like, challenged by the fact but you're selling these things to me that it's a different topic. We're not gonna go too into that. But you're making money off that. For me though it is the reason because I'm able to do that I'm able to dedicate time to it. I'm able to gain more knowledge to educate myself, to go into it in order to help people. If I got get nothing out of it, I also don't have the time sorry, but then I don't have the time to do that. This episode wouldn't be exactly multi-passionate entrepreneur, it would be about being a multi-passionate NGO and that's not what it is. We are in the in the business of bit of making money with our businesses because they are businesses. Tthey need to operate on income and revenue. Yes, so I have a question for you, Iva. We know we are surrounded by a lot of entrepreneurs, a lot of mompreneurs we've gotten to know through our beautiful podcast here and in our lives.
There are many, many, many of us that are so multi passionate about things. Now there's a lot of people that have for example, let's take Instagram, for example, because that's where a lot of people just operate. They have multiple accounts for the multiple things they're passionate about. Right? So that they'll have one for their let's say, for me, for example, one for the network marketing thing, one for the digital course, one for like that other venture. And then one personal account for their shared pictures of their kids and pets and whatever. And I so I have my own opinion about that. But I'd love to then hear like, what do you think because we know a lot of people who do that. I have also considered to say like, oh, I want to do like a private account where I share like my private life, and then one into where I do like the business side of things, right? But then everything operates on one because I had a hard time separating it. I had a hard time saying, Okay, what do I post? Because I did that because it's so much part of my life that I'm like, how am I going to separate it and it fuses all together? That I just didn't know how to do it. And so I and two, and you mentioned it so beautifully about being your authentic self, how important that is. But I think people need to then get to know me as who I am, which also involves things that I do and my private life or whatever. I mean, it all fuses as a mompreneur, you'll it just all fuses together. But then I show everything in one because again, that is what my personal brand is. But how do you separate the different passionate passions that you do and to separate forms of communication, so to say,
Iva 33:58
Well, I feel that there's no one size fits all. I feel that if you ask me, whatever is your capacity, and whatever you're willing to go into like Okay, I'm going to separate for the sake of keeping the message of like just a one track because they like it just a one track and so I'll make different accounts for that particular purpose. And the person has the capacity for doing that. I would say go for it. I don't see anything that prevents anyone from doing that. In my personal case, what I can offer is, I do have two separate accounts on my Instagram. But that is more because it was more circumstantial. Like I started to be a user of Instagram before I went fully into my business. So I don't see the need to really close my personal account. However, I am more active on my business account. And I do some resharing here and there. I don't know if that's right, or if that's if that's wrong, and I don't think it needs to be right. No, I don't think there is a rule.
But for example, I would say as you have shared, it is becoming increasingly harder to make that separation of this is what I'm sharing over here. And this is what I'm sharing over here because to your point, the place where I'm coming from, it's a place that it's me, it's a part of me, it's an expression of what I do conceptualized or through this uptake of Okay, I'm coming at it through, you know, through the work and the role that I'm wearing that moment, or is it more through this personal lens that I want to bring into the equation, but that's just I would say then it's a matter of preference in the moment of okay what hat do I want to wear? What do I want to wear? However, to your point, I am finding increasingly difficult like my personal account, if you see like the posts that I have there are from years ago, like I don't really post as much in there. I do use it for my stories. I do reshare stories from my business account, because my business account has that also personal element. They do share a lot of what happens behind the scenes and a lot of things that are just part of what makes me me and I share about, you know, my personal passions, but also about what I do and how I help in and how I was showing up in in my different ventures. So yeah, I sometimes I joke I say I have multiple personalities.
Desiree 36:38
Well, I have multiple accounts, but when it comes to practicality, as you see the time management is a big aspect, right?
Iva 36:51
Yeah, time management, the capacity. And for those that do know and follow us we do have a separate account for the podcast. Mom Bosses Abroad has its own separate account. And we do that for as you say, for the sake of keeping it a little bit cleaner, for the sake of keeping it on one track because we believe so much in this podcast that we just we just want to make it in a way that is easy for the person to interact with the episodes and the content and stay on top of things without having to scroll all the way down to back to the time… so that is just from our practical standing. But anybody can do it the way that they experienced it to be more aligned to where they are in life, to their capacity, to their time, availability and resources. So to anyone who is questioning like, Am I doing too much? Just follow your gut and if you're a bit like me and you can't help yourself then just go for it. And I think it is completely if you've already made that jump into entrepreneurship, mompreneurs you area as it is to naturally explore different things. It's totally fine to dive full on deep into one but it is absolutely okay to add on other things into your business. The main thing is that you have fun along the way. Don't stretch yourself too thin. You know, make sure you keep your focus. But absolutely that's the beauty. We don't have to confine ourselves, we can spread our wings and explore multiple passions, multiple things we're passionate about. And just to add one more thing, having doubts is pretty natural, and we'll always be having doubts, but it's essential to trust in the value of your diverse skill set, you know, to trust yourself. And this is where surrounding yourself with a supportive community is important. And this is where, you know it comes with understanding that being multi-passionate, also unlocks a lot of levels of creativity and fulfillment that possibly just one thing might not be able to unlock if you have that type of personality.
Desiree 39:27
But ultimately, don't be afraid also if you chose something and you want to pivot or change don't be afraid to evolve. Because we have to also be in tune with the seasons of life that we're in. And sometimes that change, that shift that pivot is needed. So the ability to adapt is not a weakness is actually a strength. So don't be afraid to explore and embrace all the multitude of you know, possibilities and combinations that that can come into being this multi-passionate entrepreneur because you are doing fantastic and here's a kudos to you.
